Motor Transport Manager - A conversation with Antony

What did you do prior to joining Birmingham Airport?

I started my career with the Birmingham Co-op Society as an apprentice straight from school, where I worked in the funeral department maintaining their fleet of funeral cars, Daimler limousines and later, modified Ford Granada’s.


What attracted me to the role?

Well I’d be lying if I said money didn’t play a big part, the Co-op was a great place to start my working life, but after a tour of the airport (post interview) I couldn’t see myself working anywhere else.


Tell us about your training?

My core training took place at the Co-op where I spent the first 5 years attending college, after that and until the present day I have attended many courses, some more involved than others, i.e. over years rather than weeks.


What’s a typical day for you then?

There isn’t really a typical day for me; you can come to work with a loose plan of what you intend to get done on that day, but within 10 minutes everything can change, and that’s the way it is most days.  In fact that’s what I like most about the job, no two days are the same, you learn to adapt very quickly.


What advice would you give for potential new recruits?

Without a doubt you would need to be flexible; with only 6 of us we sometimes get pulled from pillar to post, often with the lads juggling several jobs at a time. You would need to accept that during winter operations things get really busy and when it snows this definitely becomes my second home.
Having a good sense of humour is definitely an advantage and with a great team spirit this often helps with those long days and cold nights! 


What do you like best about the job?

I like the responsibility, I like the feeling of having achieved something, I especially like the variety of my job (I can’t imagine too many jobs that would have the diversity that mine has) and I really like the fact that every day is different and you have to adapt.


And what qualities are the most beneficial?

Apart from the skills needed for the job; a good sense of humour and the ability to get on with people.


Are there opportunities to develop in your career?

Yes - because I started at the airport as a motor transport fitter and now manage the team.
There are always opportunities to develop yourself further; in fact the airport actively encourages you: I’ve lost count of the number of training courses I’ve completed and all have helped me with my job.


What would you say to someone thinking about joining BHX?

Go for it, the opportunities are vast with so many different departments, added to that, it’s a really interesting place to work with lots different of things happening every day, most of which the general public never see.

In addition to that; even though the industry has been through some tough times, it’s still a really good company to work for, and I’m always proud to say I work for Birmingham Airport.
