Motor Transport Fitter - A conversation with Troy

What did you do prior to joining Birmingham Airport?

I was taken on from school as an apprentice mechanic with the Birmingham Co-operative Society, working on Daimler limousines and hearses for the wedding and funeral department.
Then moved on to the ‘big boy’s toys’, heavy goods vehicles. I was employed there for ten years.

What attracted you to the job?

I wanted a job that was hands on and learn a trade.

Tell us about your training.

Four years day release studying at both Handsworth and Hall Green College, the result becoming a Fully Skilled Mechanic and also gained a vast knowledge passed down from my senior colleagues.

I also went on many courses including Health and Safety training and I also passed both my HGV Class 1 and Fork Truck Licenses.

Oh and thirty years experience in the motor trade!!!!!

So what is a typical day for you then?

Every day is different, one day I can be going out to a breakdown and doing minor repairs, and then the next day I can be taking an engine the size of a small car out of a Fire Appliance!

What advice would you give for potential new recruits?

If you have an interest in a wide variety of vehicles and mechanical equipment then BHX will give you an interesting and challenging career.

So what do you like best about your job?

Diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults and carrying out vehicle modifications gives job satisfaction.

And what qualities are most beneficial?

To have a good vehicle mechanical and electrical background, be able to adjust to change and new ideas, be resourceful and able to work under pressure. Be able to use own initiative and also support work colleagues and able to work as part of a team.

Are there opportunities to develop in your career?

Since working at BHX I have been on several courses that have enhanced my skills and with the varied nature of the job itself I am constantly challenged on a regular basis.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining BHX?

'Jump in the waters fine!'  BHX is a great place to work and an exciting environment with a variety of job opportunities to suit everyone.  I have worked here for 21 years so that speaks for itself!!!
